From Manifesting Dreams to Expressing Individuality: The Inspiration Behind My Statement Jewelry
By Dawn L. Grady
As a woman who was raised by power players, I've always been fascinated by the strength and resilience of women. My mother, Joellen Grady, broke barriers by running an ecumenical organization for 30 years. She was also the first woman to hold that position. My aunt, Kathleen Gallon, soared through the ranks of corporate America. And my grandmother mesmerized audiences as a jazz pianist until she was 88.
All of them were women of substance who left an indelible mark on my life. They taught me the importance of standing tall, being bold, and making a statement. And one of the ways they did this was through their choice of jewelry.
The Language of Statement Jewelry
My mom, aunt, and grandma always wore outstanding statement jewelry, especially when they wanted others to notice them and respect their hard-earned boss-ness. And for me, even now, this is my favorite way of communicating my view to the world.
Wearing jewelry is more than just accessorizing. It's a language, a form of self-expression, and a way to take space in a world that expects us, as women, to always be soft-spoken and nice. When we wear a piece of statement jewelry that resonates with our personality, we are telling a story about who we are, what we believe in, and all the things we aspire to be. But more importantly, we are doing it loudly and proudly.
Jewelry Inspiration: The Warrior and the Queen
For instance, I believe that every woman has two sides — the warrior and the queen. The warrior is the protector, the one who stands up for her beliefs, her family, and her values. The queen, on the other hand, is the epitome of grace, elegance, and power.
Since I was little, the women in my family taught me that a powerful woman handles her business with class and dignity. That's the type of person I strive to be, and I design statement jewelry with this duality in mind. I infuse these regal and resilient qualities into every piece of jewelry I design.
The Women in My Life as Jewelry Inspiration
This lovely lady is my beautiful mother.
My designs are also reminiscent of the lessons I learned from my mom, aunt, and grandma; some of my jewelry inspiration ties back to them specifically.
When I was younger, I would always rush to my next milestone without ever celebrating how far I'd come. But my mom would — every now and then — try to stop me in my tracks and get me to enjoy the present. I never understood her point until I grew up. Then I designed one of my favorite pieces, the Journey Cuff Bracelet.
This bracelet features spiral symbols to represent the journey of life. Although I might still be guilty of forgetting to smell the roses from time to time, this bracelet is a restless reminder of the fact that we need to celebrate our wins and enjoy our journey.
Other designs close to my heart are the Mother's Day charm bracelets. These bracelets are a tribute to the unconditional love and protection that my mother figures always gave me. The charms read, “Everything I am, you helped me to be.” But the choice of gems was very special too. The emerald beads reflect the unconditional love you receive from your mother. The red agate reflects the fact that no one will protect you the way that your mother does.
Bold Jewelry for Strong Women
As women, we often underestimate our strength and the impact we have on the world around us. We juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, often without any recognition. But it's important to remember that we are powerful, we are resilient, and we are capable of great things.
I design jewelry that celebrates the beauty of womanhood. By using meaningful materials, symbols, and metal combinations, I aim to capture the essence of the warrior and the queen within us all.
Jewelry, in many ways, is a form of armor. Every piece of jewelry you wear is a reflection of your inner strength, your dreams, and your unique vision. So, go ahead and make a statement. Show the world who you are, even without having to say a word.
